Regulation of Massage Therapies – GCMT has held the Register for Massage Practitioners for the past 5 years.

After recent discussion with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council, GCMT decided that GCMT registrants , indeed all massage therapists would benefit by registering with CNHC. The CNHC Regulatory register is multi disciplined and therefore negates the need for multidisciplined therapists to register with numerous Regulatory Bodies.

GCMT will continue to provide the UK standards for the Massage Profession and will become the "One Stop Shop" for Massage information, just without the GCMT Register. The GCMT register is now closed

The blueprint of Massage Therapy is

Professional Associations supports the individual massage therapist

GCMT is the Governing Body for all massage therapies, bodyworks and soft tissue techniques, supporting the profession

CNHC is the regulator of Massage Therapies and other complementary therapies and protects the public

Introducing the GCMT: A letter from the chair

The GCMT welcomes the government's policy of extending public protection by encouraging the regulation of complementary therapies. Regulation whether voluntary or statutory will ensure that the public will have confidence that they have access to suitably qualified practitioners. Practitioners will be required to meet professional standards in their training, continuing professional development, codes of conduct and practice.

The GCMT brings together Massage Practitioners and bodyworkers from eleven Professional Associations who are co-operating to develop a regulatory body. By participating in this process, Massage Practitioners and bodyworkers will be able to secure a regulatory body that they are proud to be registered with because it will uphold the highest possible standards for their profession.

News and events

The Government fully supports CNHC. The Department of Health is supporting CNHC and is recommending the NHS use the CNHC Register for Complementary Therapists. Large organisations are beginning to require their therapists to be CNHC registered. Health Insurance companies are being urged to include complementary therapies in personal health insurance and that therapists used are CNHC registered. There is a strong possibility that insurance for CNHC registrants maybe reduced.

The CNHC has offered practitioner members of GCMT Professional Associations a discount if they registered before 19th July 2009 - a six month "Early Bird". In addition a further £10 discount is being offered to GCMT registrants if they register with CNHC before this date. GCMT Registrants who have already registered with CNHC may claim their GCMT registration fee back from info@cnhc.org.uk
